The Overly Friendly Critter on a Damp Walking Track up Mt Arthur

There were just so many of these friendly little creatures so eager to slip unnoticed inside our shoes.

There were just so many of these friendly little leech creatures so eager to slip unnoticed inside our shoes.

There were literally 100’s of these little guys eager to suck our blood one wet April. The children were over whelmed by them. It was raining and misty, threatening a definite ‘can’t see this’ senario when we got to the top.

You know the scene; when in desperation you hold your hand up in front of your face in the fog after a long hard climb to the top of a peak and it’s like it’s…… NOT EVEN THERE????? ………Hang on a minute. I’m sure if I squint and flap it around a little,…. hang on,…….oh yes! There it is! ##$%^  OUCH, I’ve just hit myself on the nose………..Oh and yes no blaming anyone else! It was definitely my blue glove that came looming out of the mist to bop me a beauty, making my nose run and sending me lurching sideways from that wet pointy rock I had selected blindfolded. (Time slowing down here.) Oh, over I go, hopefully not over the edge. Phew, not this time, just hands first into the scrub. ALMOST twisted my ankle!…. Yep, but no,….. I’ll be ok! Oh yuck sorry bush I just left a bit of dampness from my nose on you. Lucky no one can see me!

OK. I’ve got a bit carried away here and I know my grammar is all over the place but I say it how I think it…… And that’s how it is!

Back to the leeches. On this particular first ‘family’ ascent of Mt Arthur. The most north of the three mountains you can easily see from Launceston. We decided after an hour or so that we would give up for the day and come back in years to come when we were all moving far too fast for these little creatures to start up colonies on our shoes. ALso when, if we did find ourselves bitten we weren’t likely to scream bloody murder to the whole neighbourhood!

We’ve conquered this peak on a good day with a dog. It’s a fine walk and a great view to the north coast. I’m sure we will revisit the walk soon. Just not in April when it’s raining!

Have a great day!

Mt Arthur mulch. It seems not to be overly popular this track so we have a lovely covering of leaves and bark on the track. Not mud!
